We all love to visit or exhibit at business shows, this is a couple of tips to make it easier

What you must do before and after a business show

Business shows, exhibitions and Expos can be a very cost-effective way to make profitable connections. Here at Sterling we run and support a variety of business shows each year.

Here are some actions to take before and after attending as a delegate.



Get a feel for who’ll be along

Make sure that at the event, the people you want to meet and build relationships with will be there.

The show’s website may let you know in advance who’ll be exhibiting and social media is a great way to get a feel for who will be attending.


Identify the outcome you want

You may for example aim to come away with a set number of strong business leads, follow up meetings booked in or even orders placed.

Set yourself a realistic target.


See what you can line up before you go

Social media is a great tool for this, search for the shows #hashtag

Get involved in the pre-event posts from the event organisers and let your contacts know that you’ll be attending.

You may even be able to line up some meetings, beforehand.


Checkout all the possibilities

Most business shows include breakout events such as pre-show networking breakfasts, discussion groups and business forums (and at some, even speed networking).

Spaces will be limited so you may need to book for these before you go.


Take business cards and more

Ensure you have plenty of business cards and anything else you need, so that you can show people how you help them.

Check also that your mobile phone is fully charged.


Check logistics

Check location, venue and start and finish times as well as travel times and parking.



Following up appropriately

You’ll probably come away with lots of business cards and contact details and ideally, you’ll have made some notes relating to the follow ups you intend to make.

This may be getting connected on LinkedIn or sending emails or making phone calls to book in meetings.

For this, we suggest putting aside (in advance) the next day.


Use social media to say thank you

You may like to thank the event organisers (and post your event photos) via social media and you may also like to thank the contacts that you’ve made.
